2012/13: HEAT Thermal Imaging project

SLACCTT are working with Cumbria Action for Sustainability who are training volunteers to deliver HEAT parties during Nov/Dec 2012 and Jan 2013. For more information see http://www.cumbriagreenbuild.org.uk/index.php/events/event/?id=288&order=date.

Feb/March 2012: LEAF Home Energy project

SLACCTT are supporting the Sustainability and Energy Network in Staveley (SENS) to deliver a home energy efficiency project, alongside partners Cumbria Action for Sustainability (CAfS) with research carried out by Diane Hubbard from Green Footsteps. The project involves research into chimney balloons, a feasibility study to reduce energy use in the village hall and pavilion, a community chest of small grants and door to door energy efficiency advice, distributing free balloons and other energy saving products. For more information see http://www.sustainablestaveley.org.uk.

2012: Biked Up, Pedal Powered

Biked-Up, Pedal-Powered, is a partnership between SLACCTT, The Brewery Arts Centre Kendal, and Kendal Mintfest, the international street arts festival hosted by the town. It is a bike dance performed by local young people (predominantly boys) who are street stunt bikers, choreographed professionally with the Brewery. The performance will be powered by bike generators made by the SLACCTT group and pedalled by the audience. The show aims to be part of the Mintfest programme during 2012.

The project will be overseen by a new group of Young Producers and a steering group to guide the technical developments. We expect the project will have a multiplier effect. By engaging new audience actively, we draw in their families and friends too. As an innovative and fun project, who hope to attract wide publicity. We can then build on these new audiences with our wider activities. We will use the project to create the maximum impact.

2011: Active Travel

This year the transport group embarked on the Active Travel project. We ran the Cycle Challenge competition with a revamped website: www.southlakes-cyclechallenge.co.uk.

We have also produced an Active Travel Guide which was distributed in doctor surgeries, dentists, leisure centres, etc, as well as a new bus map for Kendal and a Walking & Cycling map for Windermere & Bowness.

The final strand of the project involves working with 5 primary schools to promote cycling and walking. A project report will be posted here in December 2011.

2011: Sustainable Living Awards

In partnership with Kendal Town Council, we launched our Sustainable Living Awards, open to all community groups in Kendal. The aim wa to challenge community groups to do something different each week and an awards ceremony was held in the summer.

2010: Summer of Cycling

We are continuing with CycleFest this year by staging the Summer of Cycling. This is a 6 month cycling promotion project which centres around a workplace cycle challenge, 6 months of events, producing a cycling & walking map for Kendal as well as cycle marketing to every home in Kendal.

2010: Staveley GTi2

This is the second year of our Green Travel Initiative project in the nearby village of Staveley. This year we have secured funds to continue with another 6 months of events, as well as setting up a car club and marketing sustainable transport to the whole village.

2009/2010: Home Energy Action Together (HEAT)

HEAT took place over winter 2009/10 and was aimed at getting up to 150 houses in the Kendal Castle area to sign up to three 'asks' - 1) to make the 'Big Switch' to a renewable energy supplier, 2) to fill out a home energy check and receive a free report on how to make your house more energy efficient, and 3) to install a free digital smart meter which we provide.

The full project details can be downloaded here.

This project has now been completed (March 2010), and the project report is now available to download: HEAT Final Report.

2009/2010: Kendal & Staveley Car Club

Working in partnership with South Lakes District Council, we are currently working to promote the setting up of a car club in Kendal and Staveley. As of writing we have managed to get several people to donate cars and are working with Common Wheels and the District Council. We hope to see this up and running by early 2011.

We are also currently looking for funds to develop a business model for a Cumbria wide car club which we hope to develop with other community groups across Cumbria.

2009: Staveley Green Travel Initiative

In 2009 we embarked on an exciting and unique transport project in the nearby village of Staveley. To see the project website visit www.staveley-gti.co.uk. For more details on what the project is about click here.

The initial funded stage of the project is now complete. To download the final report click here (you can also download all the materials we developed during the project at this link).

2009: CycleFest - Celebrating all kinds of cycling for all kinds of people

Kendal's first ever festival of cycling took place from 30th May to 7th June. The project was 100% volunteer driven and was a huge success with thousands of people coming out for the festival day. The festival website has now been updated to run our new cycling project the Summer of Cycling - see summer of cycling.

Events

We are continually looking to improve and increase our presence at local events, and we have developed a wide range of resources to ensure that event organisers continue to invite us (see our events section for more details).

We are keen to invest more in our event resources and to build up and train more volunteers. If you are creative, or have practical or trade skills, or are keen to engage with the public on climate change, or just want to help out, get in touch!

Talks & Film Showings

In order to ensure we carry on engaging the wider public we run a regular series of talks, film showing and other events. These have included a sellout showing of The Age of Stupid at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal, guest speakers, apple days, transition living workshops and much more.

If you have any ideas for a good event let us know!

Supporting the Wider Movement

Organising transport to demonstrations and campaigning on the key issues is always at the heart of what we do. Previous years have seen us support a wide variety of events, from the annual Campaign Against Climate Change marches, to the G20 convergence, sending a full minibus to Copenhagen and sending members to Earth First! and Climate Camp.

We also attend a wide variety of conferences from the national Transition conference to regional and local conferences and gatherings. We see supporting and helping to build the wider movement as vital in everything that we do.
